You know...Gogui Dieng was a 3 star recruit too...not every African native is a "project". I actually find it exciting that he's only played a little and managed to have games in high school where he puts up 28 or such, what did Gaines avrerage in high school, 10 ppG?

Dieng was a top 50 recruit...

Point is that he was not a consensus top 50 recruit and developed into an NBA prospect. It can be a crap shoot with big men in recruiting. I actually dont have a problem with NTS's concerns. Mick has brought in guys from Africa and frankly they have not given the production that was needed for the team to take the next step to an elite level. Many programs have this problem but I understand NTS skepticism. I choose to trust Mick and I hope that 4 years with Siddy would produce a better product than 2 years of Thomas, Nyarsuk, and Cheik.

having a player of JJ's skill level starting t the 5 is what will be comical

I love how all of you believe Strickland is going to be this dominate post player here next year. He wasn't ranked in the rivals 150 he wasn't in the ESPNU top 100, just because JJ is 6'9" which is undersized at the center position by 1 inch you believe Jamaree Strickland, a player who is coming off of a major knee injury is more of a respectable player to put there. Mick is recruiting bigs because he needs to, he has a millionaire guards and 2 big, he obviously realizes that we need more people at the 5 position, but come on people there is no video of Strickland and what he can do against major competition, JJ has played in 6 NCAA tournament games, he's the obvious chose for the starting role at the 5.

This all being said I think Strickland will be a good player by his junior season, but too put that much expectation in a kid that wasn't highly recruited and just coming off of an extreme knee injury is ludacris to me.

after watching JJ for 3 years, I dont need to see anyone elses tapes to know they are more offensively skilled than JJ...and thats being nice

I would rather strickland play every minute at the center even if he isnt ready yet. Id rather watch younger kids learn and do what they are supposed to do, even if shots arent falling, than to see guys taking bad shots, committing awful turnovers and dumb fouls. Which after your Junior year, shouldnt be the norm

I don't think Strickland will be starting...definitely not to start the year...but you have to admit he couldn't be walking into a much easier scenario. Freshmen get thrown into the mix right away provided there is a reason to do it. Mick has had lots of players come in as freshmen and get pretty good minutes right away out of necessity.

In terms of Strickland not being recruited hard may be a little misleading because he was a big target before injury. By the time he gets here and the season starts (provided he has no setbacks) he should be fully recovered, in shape, stronger, etc. If Gates were here I would say he has no chance in hell in freshman year...but Gates is not here and we have nothing close to Gates.

Yes Strickland has it easy because he is a true 5 jj is the best thing for us next year at the 5 and he is a 4, but I am one of the few fans that believes in JJ and thinks he is going to have a really good season next year. You can not doubt the kids heart and that is what being a bearcat is all about is the gutty scrappy players such as JJ

JJ isn't close to 6'9"...and no one has said that Strickland will be a dominate post player next year. I'm in the camp that just hopes he can contribute. But that doesn't make JJ good, especially at the C position. Based on most posters here, Mbodj was far from adequate at the position yet JJ averaged less points than him at his natural position and he is easily inferior to Mbodj defensively.

JJ does play with his heart, which is great, but it'd be nice if that wasn't all he played with. Considering he has trouble grasping how to play at his natural position, I'm not sure how he is going to grasp how to play at a new position, especially considering how undersized he will be.

I agree with you. People are getting caught up on the dumbest things. The starting 5 next year will not matter, Mick is gonna give lots of people each a little playing time. He is just trying to add pieces to the puzzle so he can get them in and find what works. JJ cannot play the 5 the whole game. If he does, we won't win much. If Strickland plays the 5 the whole game, we won't win much, can't trust a frosh. to play the whole game. My point is dont judge him and he might surprise you with some of his offensive abilities, maybe he can provide a spark when we are struggling. If he starts to struggle, put JJ in. Sidy might be able to provide some decent minutes as a backup. Lots of different parts to this team, that is what excites me. Hopefully, they can mold together a little better than this past year's team. If this past year was considered a "down" year or "bad" year, then I am happy and excited about the future.

Yea JJ is 6'7". Team sites for the most part add an Inch to most players. But size isnt JJs problem. It seems as if he just doesnt understand the game, meaning his basketball IQ just isnt very high. He commits some pretty awful fouls on both ends of the floor. Most of his excitement or good plays come on the defensive end. BUT, after he makes a nice block on the defensive end he will feel like lebron and then try and do something on offense and immediately give the ball right back by a charge or a dribble off the foot. And then the illegal screen which hes good for 1 a game. So after all is said and done does his defense really effect the game much if he gives the ball right back?

JJ thrives in a lineup where he plays next to a true big man...ala Yancy. JJ(mean face) emerged because of yancy. Yancy gets doubled on the post and then JJ is wide open for a lay up. Actually the whole team was better because of Yancy being a force down low requiring double teams.

But this past year without yancy we saw a lot of flaws in JJs game because he was asked to do things that we found out he simply can not do. In order to become a better player for next year i believe JJ will thrive the most as the 4, and preferably off the bench. Some guys play better off the bench than they do as starters.

He needs to get some post moves. The whole blindly turn and throw at the rim thing just isnt working..who knew

Plant your feet when you set a screen. Its really not that hard

Be strong with the ball. How many times did he dribble with his head down right into another player for either a charge, jump ball, or dribble out of bounds. These things are just unacceptable to do on a game by game basis

Make lay ups. How many wide open lay up attempts did he, and all the other bigs, miss this season? He knows he will be quicker than anyone who guards him so he really needs to be able to beat someone off the dribble or with quicker post moves.

I also think JJ should come off the bench, or I guess be the starting 4, because SK obviously needs to be on the court with a post player that not only creates a mismatch, but also one that can score. SK can not do it all himself, that is a given. He also thrived in the offense with a true center. Someone who will draw the man off SK just a little to kick it out to him. With JJ at the center position, he hasnt posed that threat. So when he gets the ball on the post what happens? Well this year he immediately kicked it back out to our guys on the perimeter who have men all over them. What does that do? You know SK is going to shoot it, so having a Big draw SKs defender down to the post a little giving SK a little more wiggle room on his shot will help immensely.

Personally, I think JJ has enough talent to get drafted.............by the Globetrotters! :D

There is just no sense in me talking to you people about JJ especially in May, I guess we will have to wait til next year.

Points are NOT the only stat that matters and when I see people say things like that it makes me realize how little you understand the game of basketball. You can talk about how much he turns the ball over all you want.

He changes peoples shots or gets a steal in 90% of the plays on the defensive side enough said............... anything he contributes on offense is gravy.

We don't need him to score, we will have plenty of scorers next year we need a defender and right now he is THE ONLY PROVEN DEFENDER ON THE TEAM.

made up percentages are fun. But I guess you dont understand the points im trying to make..which like you said, makes me think you dont understand the game of basketball.

You say offense isnt everything and I agree. BUT, like I stated before is JJs defense accomplishing much if he turns the ball over on the other end? You said anything he contributes on offense is gravy, but what about the times he gives the other team the ball? And I also think you value his defense way too much.

Does he stay out of foul trouble? and are those fouls dumb fouls? If the answer to both of those is yes, than your caps "THE ONLY PROVEN DEFENDER ON THE TEAM" is far from true. SK is a much better defender than JJ IMO

Now again, like i stated before, JJ will get a block and then go down the floor and turn the ball over. With that said, If he does this, does the block on the other end mean anything or really do much? Technically the change of possession didnt do much since his turnover on one end, just ended up being a turnover on the other end.

There is an assist to turnover ratio for players, but what about a block to turnover ratio? If he gets 5 blocks in 1 game, but then accumulates 5 fouls 4 turnover and 3 missed layups in 15
minutes of play would you consider that a successful game?

He averaged more turnovers and fouls this season than blocks, assists and steals
