This is where your logic falls apart. The game is changing. It's changing in college and it's changing in the NBA. There are many teams in the NBA playing basketball without a big man by your definition. Kids that are 6'9" and taller want to be like Kevin Durant and not Marc Gasol. That's just the way it is. Big men in the NBA don't just go post up. They set picks and roll to the basket. There are fewer exceptions to that than there are those that are the rule. Why is this? Because they are athletic and most of them can shoot out to 20 feet. That's the new NBA. Kids watch this. Jermaine Lawrence is not Kevin Durant and he is not Tim Duncan. From what I have gathered, he is somewhere in between. He can play on the perimeter and he can play in the post. He rebounds the heck out of the ball and can be a defensive force by blocking shots. This is the kind of "Big Man" Mick Cronin wants. This is what he is trying to recruit. Putting Jermaine at the 4 will create mismatch issues for 95% of the teams in college basketball. That's what this program has been lacking. If you want to guard Jermaine with a smaller player he can take them inside and post them or shoot over them. If you guard him with a bigger guy, he can take them off the dribble and score. Let's not all set unrealistic expectations for a freshman, so realize that he will take some time to develop. But the idea behind what makes Jermaine special is his ability to create mismatches all by himself.

If The Game Is Changing And kids Watching Who Are Over 6'9 want To Play Like durant Then How Will Lawrence Be A Mismatch 95% Of The Time. Seems Like HE Will Be Playing Against Players Just Like Himself At The 4. Talk About Logic....

I simply mean Justin wishes he was more of a small forward. Problem is he cant shoot or dribble. Its why he was so ineffective trying to play that role this year. Jermaine is a top 25 recruit because at 6'9 he can dribble, shoot, and drive.

true that his offense blows, but he can easily guard that position. im not saying lawrence wont be awesome but probably not that big of a mismatch for other forwards at the 4. if a team was playing a true 5 and we had a line up of thomas at the 3, rubles at the 4, and lawrence at the 5 then youre talking about a couple mismatches.

How did JJ do guarding the likes of Otto Porter, DeAndre Daniels and Kadeem Batts? Here's a hint. It wasn't "easy"...

The only thing that would make sense to me if we got this guy is Gaines transfers and one of the new freshman play a year at prep or de-commit.

It was most certainly a mismatch. He couldn't guard a highly skilled 4...

Ok. Good call that some players are better than others..but I believe most people consider a mismatch consisting of a tall guard who can post up his shorter adversary or a post player with quickness who can take advantage of slower big men. JJ is not a slow big man he is an offensively challenged sf. I assume by your post that you believe Lawrence would be able to defend the otto porter type players?

I would also like to thank you for posting here so I don't have the pay for your clever insight.

I don't think any body guarded otto porter well, JJ is good defensively lets not get that confused here, he is a good team defensive player though, most of his steals/blocks come when he plays help side defense, I'd agree he can work on is 1 on 1 man coverage on defense, but a lot of the time his man scores because he helps out another person that got beat of the dribble and then the person he was originally guarding is wide open, I'm one of the few people on the site that actually likes JJ so I may have a little bias.

I agree with Chad on this one. Otto Porter was a mismatch for any player on UC's team defensively.

I like JJ a lot as well, and there is certainly merit to your point that he is a good team defender. He also does a very good job defending more of the power type traditional 4s that operate 15 feet and in. He just doesn't have the instincts to guard the stretch 4 like the guys I listed, and it usually resulted in open perimeter shots or trips to the line when they went by him. He just isn't a plus defender in space against skilled forwards. That is the epitome of a mismatch against those guys, and why guys like Lawrence are so valued on the recruiting trail...

Chad, like you I like JJ as a team defender. He is much more effect coimng off his man and helping others. He is foul prone and not big enough to guard the low post. Stretch fowards and post players with good size will eat him up. JJ is a role player. If he is being counted on for major minutes we are in trouble next year.

He is a good team defender because he loves going for blocks and it's easier to get blocks when helping out. When he has to guard his man on the perimeter he purposely lets them drive by him so he can go for a block. It's very frustrating to watch.

Seconded

to JJ's defense 6'9 players that have an outside game and can beat you off the dribble are the hardest people to guard in all of basketball. There won't be too many players that can do that, and if they do, then you just have to tip your cap and hold them for as low as you can hold them for, JJ isn't the only good defender that can't stop these types of players, Jermaine Lawrence is that type of player so maybe JJ will have good practice at trying to defend him this year in practice.
