This debate is pointless. It was a packaged deal. Football had potential and basketball added to an already excellent league.
Agreed.

Yeah but Bob's not here, and Mick is getting them back where they need to be, no one in the country would have this team back to powerhouse status yet from where they were 6 years ago. What does Bob have to do with that? It's apples and oranges. No comparison whatsoever
You are soooooooooooooooooooooo wrong TLL. UC basketball had zilch to do with UC getting in the Big East, the Big East did not need any more basketball teams, the Big East needed football teams to replace the 3 they lost. What got UC in the Big East vs another school with a football team was the terrific presentation about UC made by President Nancy Zimpher. The 3 Presidents on the expansion committtee and former Commissioner Mike Tranghese have all publically stated that it was Nancy Zimpher who got UC in The Big East.
Without Huggins, he said, “We would not be in the Big East. Our football team would have never had the wins they had because they would have never been able to recruit to a BCS conference" - Mick Cronin. Yawn Ralphy, yawn.
Two small things.
1) The main reason why Bob never got of the second round was that he only had one day to prepare his team for a 2nd opponent. He was never good at short turn around games during the regular season either.
2) I can't believe BCT has a 13 page thread consisting of about 9 posters. Not criticizing. Just an observation.

These are the words of commissioner Mike Tranghese as to UC getting in the Big East, football and Nancy got UC in the Big East:
Q. How much of a role did the success of the UC basketball program play in making the school attractive to the Big East?
A. We were very good in basketball before we took these five programs in. In basketball, we were fine. We wanted to go places that made sense. Coming to a large metropolitan area was important. I looked at the basketball program and said, "We don't need to talk about Cincinnati's basketball. We know what it's been. It's got an incredible tradition."
We talked about could they long-term, by being affiliated with a BCS league, have a chance to be a good football program? Everybody I talked to told me that they had a recruiting base here that they hadn't been able to draw upon.
They thought that with the right coach, the right approach and in our league that it would be successful. When we came together, it was just a matter of our presidents and (UC president) Nancy Zimpher being comfortable. We wanted to see where she was coming from. Ten minutes into the meeting, I could tell that the interaction between Nancy and the presidents was positive.Q. So was it actually the football program's potential that was the deciding factor?
A. These were the factors and they were all important: It was the basketball program, it was the potential in football, it was being in this market, and then I think our presidents had to be comfortable with Nancy, and she did a fabulous job of articulating why Cincinnati wanted to be in the league and the kind of things she was committed to doing.
Q. You know the situation with men's basketball coach Bob Huggins' contract and the controversy it has caused here. Is that a concern for the league?
A. I just don't deal in that world of whether coaches come or go or stay. It's just not my business. This is an area of institutional autonomy.
I 'll bet you're a used cars salesmen's dream.
Salesman: "It's got blah, blah, blah, and here's the sticker price, which is already discounted."
Ralph: "I'll take it!"
Salesman:"Would you like the bend you over needless warranty?"
Ralph: "Do I need it?"
Salesman: "Yes, we recommend it."
Ralph: "Sold."
Ralph: "So should I really get all my work done here at the dealership?"
Salesman: "Yes, we recommend it, even the oil changes 5k miles.
Ralph: "5k thousand, but the commercial for Jiffy Lube say 3k?"
Salesman: "That's actually not...nevermimd. Yes 3k"
Ralph: "Great see you in 3k miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Pleasure doing business with you."
Salesman: "The pleasure was all mine. Enjoy your Saturn, sir."
Salesman: (to co-worker) "I finally sold the last Saturn on the lot. I couldn't believe how easy it was. The guy bought everything I told him."
