Was a clear travel...

Have to wonder if some around here have ever played basketball??

For your information, I directed Cleveland Cavaliers basketball for television for 7 years. I understand the rules of the game very well. Based on the replay, it appeared he dribbled, stopped, pump faked, kept the left foot on the floor and moved his right. That's what I based my opinion on.

But keep hurling veiled insults. Makes you look super smart.

I thought he had a little left foot slide after that.

Maybe so. I think referees anticipate travel violations and other calls quite a bit out of laziness. Plus, no consistency in the call. I'm sure UC got away with a few travels (vis a vi Caupain), the Clark call I thought was anticipated because of the way he pump faked. It's a tentative move that won't be rewarded more often than not, so whether it was an actual travel is moot. He got what he deserved.

He seemed pretty snarly throwing it down on Boatright's dome.

That was a nice aggressive move in transition. The negative? It was his only basket. Like I said, not trying to bash the young man, he's been fantastic. It was a nice initiation into the land of higher quality bigs that I'm sure he'll learn from and apply later.

The turnovers and lack of free throws, while obviously not what you want, I think is as much an indication of how physical the game is being allowed to be played at as anything. Why I say that is because we are generating as many turnovers as we commit and we aren't giving up alot of free throws. Before the fouls at the end solely to stop the clock we had more free throw attempts than them. Sometimes we turn the ball over, especially down low, because the refs are allowing bodies to be draped on players. Also a reason we aren't getting to the free throw line. As long as the refs are consistent and we get to play physical d and generate turnovers and missed shots then it doesn't really affect the outcome. With that said, of course we need to take care of the ball and cut down on the unforced turnovers.

That offensive possession in the 2nd half for UC with 5:30 to go where Caupain missed the layup, Moore's 3 goes in and out, and then our shot gets blocks and UConn hits the 3. That was a game changer.

Rematched the Clark "travel" when there was 1 min left. That was not a travel. Clark's right foot was planted and the left was pivot. Bad call.

That's what I saw as well. Apparently, that means we've never played basketball ;)

As someone mentioned earlier, and they were correct, that was the correct call. Clark did a "jump-stop", which means neither foot can move once both feet come down. When his feet came down, the right foot remained in place, but then he lifted his left foot. That is traveling.

Not sure I've ever seen Gary Clark do a jump stop and I don't recall him doing it on that play. But, not being sure, will take your word for it. Too bad I deleted the recording or I'd double check it.

No, he did jump into the middle of the post and then make a move. Sadly enough.

DeBerry needs to wake up and realize he can do anything he wants in the low post or even hi-lo and not a damn thing anyone can do to stop him (would you take a charge from that?) Dude's got an NBA body and needs to start using it like he has in games earlier this season.

The subtext in all of this is disappointment in losing another very, very winnable game. I felt throughout the game that UC was the better team, experienced guard play made the difference. Teams are forcing the action toward the guards and until they consistently find ways to run the offense effectively and play aggressively on the perimeter, the better teams are going to make life hard on Ellis, Clark, and DeBerry.

Agreed, mostly. We were missing our Boatright. Need a Kilpatrick type guy to pull everything together. Do I see Caupain filling that role? Absolutely! It will just take him time, and possibly not even this year. Dude's a soph after all, take what you can get and be happy for it.

Without that go-to guy, you are going to be creamed by teams that do have one because they will dictate the game for both teams. Usually not a problem if both teams have one or two of that type of character, but if one team doesn't it becomes immediately obvious and you can only play to them. Next year, though. Next year.

I might be the minority here but I'm not really that upset that they lost. They are so much better than they were the first 4 games and everyone keeps improving. Today they lost on the road to a team that will finish in the top three in the conference.

It has got to the point that I hate reading this website after they lose. People always overreact and it gets really annoying. If the cats can sneak a win again Memphis they will be sitting pretty. If they make the tourny this year that will be a huge accomplishment. I was worried they wouldn't make the NIT at the beginning of the season.

Just my 2 cents and the alcohol talking but I feel like they can win this conference.

I don't think anyone was overly critical today. And we'll do more than sneak a win out at Memphis. We're going to bury them. I'm talking double digits.

Why is this, you ask?

One main reason is I know fairly little about the overall college basketball landscape, outside of my team and their situation. Early season banter consisting of "they need to run the table or they won't even be on the bubble" "the conference is so weak this year they need to win every game" ad infinitum gets to me. So, using those guidelines, any loss to me is "the sky is falling" as we are knocked out of the tourney. I lean heavily on the opinions of others to gauge my own prognosis, I am not ashamed to say, so when that happens I can't help but feeling upset that we are knocked out of the running because of our lack of chances against good competition. Blame me, the less informed sports fan, for swallowing up the opinion of the masses.

It didn't seem like anyone overreacted that much. Some disappointment; minor critiques of individual players (with the caveat that the players under discussion like Caupain are solid young players); a fairly benign disagreement over whether Clark traveled or not; and so on.

The 'Cats are in an interesting spot. The two players with the most ability (and coincidentally, the two players upon which the season will rise and fall) are in their 1st and 2nd years in the program, respectively. Caupain is still the youngest player on the team, no? They are equal parts fun and maddening to watch, often within the same game or half.

I wouldn't bank on a double digit win at Memphis for this very reason. We just don't know what we're going to get night in, night out. Apply the cliche and take it one game at a time, look for improvement.
