Early in the season there were "2" people in here who suggested a plan to "transition" our way out of giving Troy Caupain the keys to the car. He is, and has been, a weak answer to solving a problem that we've had since Mick Cronin became our coach. We never have a true point guard, and that has always been a major problem with our lack of a well functioning offense. That was not a call for immediately inserting Jenifer into the starting lineup. That was a call for him to get significant minutes now, which would hopefully lead to increasing minutes down the road. For a while, he was getting decent minutes. When he stopped getting minutes, the team stopped looking good. The change in style and pace and the look of the offense when Jenifer comes in is very apparent. Terrance Gibson was one of our greatest examples of a guy who came off the bench and energized our team all the way to the Final 4. If you let Caupain have the lions share of the minutes, we're destined to be the same low efficiency offense that we've seen for Mick's complete tenure. I might even add, Caupain is 2-19 shooting 3s in the last two games. Is he our answer at the 2-spot either? Hard to say, but he definitey isn't the long term solution at the PG position. Jenifer needs minutes.....period.....and not just single digit minutes.
As far as the coach, it's been 10 years now. That's been a long enough time to rally our fan base and make us a major player in college basketball again. Our fans aren't rallying. We're not a major player even in our own state, and we're now "solidly" number 2 even in our own city. Two 3-game losing streaks to X in 10 years. A bunch of 1st and 2nd round defeats in March. Poor recruiting. No NBA players. Even when he starts recruiting better, he quickly abandons a strategy to upgrade the offense and returns to the same old tired slow down strategy we've seen for 10 years.
Some have seen all this for years. Based on this thread, a lot more are finally starting to come in out of the fog. I loved all the changes early in the year, believed recruiting was on the rise, therefore, I have barely mentioned the head coach question. But, these recent developments are bringing that topic back to the forefront again. Again, my feelings are that 10 years are a more than fair chance. I don't see things changing much.
