I'm saying Jenifer needs to average around 12. Not play exactly 12 every game. Some games he should play 15+, some games not quite as much. But it should never be 4. He went from 11 vs Nebraska, to 7 vs GW, to 5 vs Butler, to 4 vs Xavier. As Mick gets tighter and tighter, we score less and less and our players aren't given the opportunity to showcase their talent. Bc Mick is terrified of what might happen if a guy he doesn't have firm control over yet makes a bad play. Our player development is horrendous. The more time our guys spend around Mick, the worse offensively they seem to get. Jenifer isn't getting minutes bc he isn't doing what Mick wants. But what Mick wants sucks. Sorry, just going to flat out say it. He brings these guys in and breaks them down and tells them to forget all they know bc nothing they have ever done to get here will ever work again. Then by the time they're seniors, these guys don't even know how to play basketball anymore.
couldn't disagree more. Jenifer isn't getting minutes because he is not the best option. As I mentioned above I do think Mick needs to decide on a course and stick with it. If that is a fast paced offense run it and live with the results.

We can agree to disagree on how to go about developing players. But I do agree about picking a style and sticking with it. Identity is important. You have to know who you are as a team.

sounds good. Not in a good mood tonight. It's being reported that Dalton may be out for the year. Was looking forward to him finally winning a playoff game and silencing his critics.

I guess I'm angry. But to say this game doesn't matter is ridiculous. Especially for a native Cincinnatian to say that. Tell that to the alum or the students or donors. Certainly it means little if you go on to have a great tourney run but for the people who support this program and give their money, his comments were very much out of line. Why does he think it sells out every year? I understand it can not define the season but to say it doesn't matter is silly.

Agreed, but thinking "city pride" is gonna carry you past a team that is clearly better (right now at least), on their home court, with the same city pride, is a little irrational. Basically the deck was stacked in X's favor

they created their advantage. They have overcome many coaching changes in the process.

Jacob, why can't you obviously see that the other guards who can't shoot, and can't pass, and really don't play that well defensively either, should continue to get substantially more playing time? At least with Jenifer, we offer a change of pace, and a guy that really offers the best chance of getting the ball to teammates who will be in a better position to score. He may be a downgrade (maybe not) to that one single position. But, the opportunity for him to make the other 4 guys better over time makes the risk worth it to me. I absolutely believe he will make those around him better, and if given some decent minutes, I believe you'll see him develop substantially as well. At one time, everyone was knocking him for his turnovers. Over the last 5 games, he has 8 assists and 2 turnovers. That is against the strongest competition we've faced all year. He hasn't shot well, but hey, how has Troy been shooting? If we leave him buried on the bench, more of what we've seen lately is destined to become the norm.

I'm staying the course. This loss sucks something vicious, but it's a loss and it doesn't have to dictate the SEASON. Time will tell. I'm aggravated at the loss to that team across town BUT, I'm staying the course. Stay civil guys. This could still be a special season.

CC, we're all going to stay the course obviously. What else can we do? You just go with the flow. I know where this is all headed. We all do. I think we have a team that is capable of big things. It's up to the coach to push the right buttons and get the most out of this team's potential. We'll stay the couse and see what happens. I 100% agree with your last sentence. This still can be a special season. Each of us has suggested different approaches to making this season special. The only thing we can say for sure is that yesterday's approach probably won't end in anything special.

I don't think Jenifer is ready for a big time role. Jmo. However, at this point, if you wanna take minutes from KJ and put Caupain at the 2 more to let Jenifer play the point...I'm all for it.

You could argue that none of our guards are ready for a big time role. Saturday was the big time. Butler was the big time. How did they perform? Nobody has suggested a big time role for him yet. But, he needs a role, not less than 10 minutes a game. He adds a new wrinkle, a change of pace. It's like pitching Sam Lecure followed by Aroldis Chapman. If you pitch all fastball pitchers, the other team starts to adapt. It's the same with basketball. JJ is a change of pace. It makes the defense think and have to respond differently. It also makes our players play differently because they know he will throw it to them. We have been proving this to be correct because we have stopped playing him, and look at our offense. Now that the turnover excuse is fading, it is suddenly his defense. What will it be next?

I hear you. In hindsight I look back to previous seasons. We started the '11-'12 season 5-3, with a loss to Presbyterian and the ugly mess that was the X brawl. The years before, we beat the hell out of X. However, that season we ended up going to the Sweet 16. Killa's Sr. year we won the AAC despite losing to X (a game we should have won handily).

I hate X. I was at a Christmas party in a very religious home Saturday evening and the way I was acting, the host should have called a priest to perform an exorcism.

Now though, in hindsight, as much as losing to that team across town burns the hell out of me, I'll table that feeling as we move forward because we have numerous opportunities for some really good wins. IF we can play to our potential, we may look back on Saturday and just shrug our shoulders thinking, "Ah well."

Remember guys. We all bleed red and black and want to win every game. So does everyone else though. The talent is there. I, for one, am very optimistic that we can put it together. Our past trends say we will.

Go Bearcats!

Difference in game was fundamental passing from X and keeping hands up on D creating horrible passing for us

It's how you define "putting it together" that matters. If we're just putting it together to make the NCAA and lose in the 1st or 2nd round, that's not acceptable anymore. I think many were viewing this as a season to finally get beyond the Sweet 16. Two weeks ago, it appeared as though that might be a real possibility. What a difference 2 weeks has made. It's hard to visualize that team we saw Saturday getting past the first round.

This is all on the coach in my opinion. He has size, experience, depth, shooters (I think???), talented freshmen who bring something new, etc. I think most would agree, the pieces are in place. If he can't get it done with this roster, I'm not sure he can ever get it done. He has to beat both VCU and Iowa St. to somewhat get us back to to where we were two weeks ago. That'll be a tall order. If we lose both, we may never get back.

Name one player on out team outside of Ellis and Shaq you could say ready for big time games?

Bulldog, nobody in here believes Shaq is ready for big time games. Haven't you been reading all the posts. They believe Shaq should be on the bench and Evans starting. I happen to believe Shaq has done pretty well this year. He's had a few bad moments, but overall, I'll take what he has given. If Evans needs to start, there would be others I would pick over Shaq to hit the bench. If the others were playing better, I don't think you would see Shaq trying to do too much like he sometimes does. Just my opinion.

The NBA doesn't matter, lots of GREAT college players never make it in the NBA. We don't get many sure fire NBA players.

Fair enough. So then let's assume no one on the team averages 15 ppg this year. That will mean in 10 years Mick will have ZERO players win a tournament game and average 15 ppg in the same season. How's that for player development? That fact would scare the crap out of me if I'm Evans or Cumberland.

Agreed. Caupain at 36 minutes per game, long term, is a disaster...and not because of anything to do with Troy's game. And Justin needs that 10-12 minutes per starting right now. If he doesn't get the reps in december, he isn't getting them in January or February.

this same rotation minus Sanders got us past Purdue and played Ky tough. Evans has replaced Sanders. What's changed? Rule changes. There is 5 seconds less on shot clock. As a defensive minded team should that help us or hurt us? Replacing Sanders with Evans is that a plus or minus? All summer long all we heard was how hard they worked in weight room. Who backed up Troy last year? Is Clark better this year or last year? Have we improved our ball skills? Last year everyone screamed for Cobb to start. He is, has that been a good thing a bad thing or neutral? Is Moore serviceable or is he a swing and a miss? Is this team built to be up tempo? I mean we scored plenty against the cupcakes and 76 against Butler in a losing effort. We came with 55 against X and looked the worst I have ever seen against a 1-3-1 zone. So my question is getting Jennifer 10-12 minutes a game is going to change all that? Against the cup cakes he had his moments as did everyone.

Here's my take. Mick is trying to force feed a group into a faster paced offense and to this point they have not clicked. Especially against better competition. We have not guarded, handled the rock or boarded as well as we did last year with virtually the same group. we have entered the toughest part of our schedule and we have regressed instead of improved. League is just around the corner. This team is not trending in the right direction. Is 10-12 minutes of JJ and Moore going to reverse that? My eyes tell me that even when we were blowing out the cupcakes we still had defensive issues. It's my opinion that this team is not going to simply out score people. If we don't get back to playing hard nosed, lock down defense we are in for a disappointing season. My question is with as well as we closed out last year and with virtually everyone a year wiser, stronger and more focused why did we need to change? At the end of last year were we not pushing the ball a bit more then normal? Again what's changed? Why didn't we build off last years strengths? Were they mishandled last year? Now if JJ is Devon Downey, pushing the pace may be in order but nothing I've seen on either side of the ball indicates that he is. Mick needs to play to the strengths of his team. Right now it's more then obvious we are not. Something that has got him to 5 straight dances. This team is not now or by the end of the year going to be a run and gun team. Be what you are and improve your weaknesses. If we play the same style as we finished the year with last year and improved the efficiency of our offense would we be a better team?

Look guys we do not see practice. We are not D-1 coaches. None of us. We are emotionally driven fans. For the most part a guy makes a good play and we all think he should be getting more time. If he misses a shot or turns it over bench him. If you think I'm wrong go revisit the threads. Discussing strategy and who gets what minutes is fun but again none of us are qualified. At the end of the day we have no influence on what happens in the game except the attendance figures. Will all know how successful the team was at the end of the year.
