Time for people who want to play to play

Thomas hasn't shown up for awhile now...not sure what his deal is. Yancy picks what games he wants to play. Bishop...needs to stop shooting threes...and possibly stop shooting altogether. SK, good gam. Dion, good game. If it wasn't for our Guards today...would have lost by 30 points. Well....the reaility is...Yancy will never be more than a 10 pt...6 rebound a game player.....and why didn't Cash shoot some treys in the second half...he was stroking 25 footers in the first half...

I can live with the 10 ppg. Yancy benefits this team by being a presence. He fails to be one when he drifts 12-15 feet from the basket. If he could actually hit that shot with regularity it'd be different. He can't so he needs to stop. My one fear coming out of the Xavier game was that Yancy found fools gold by hitting the jumpers he took. The past two games he has had a chance to establish homself as one of the premiere bigs in this league by going up against Gilchrist and Jackson. In both cases he came up miserably short.

What I can't live with is Yancy's rebounding. Thomas outrebounds Yancy for goodness sake! Gates should be a given for 9-10 rebounds every single night they play. He has the size, the athleticism, and bulk to be one of the top rebounders in this country. All he lacks is heart. Maybe Oz can give it to him because he doesn't want it for himself. He is pissing a chance for a nice NBA career away. Hope he likes Europe.

Ralphy answer the question... why did Yancy have only 3 rebounds vs usf??

Was he hurt in that game as well? Stop making clown statements.

You have no answer, because the fact of the matter is Yancy puts in effort when he chooses.

This year Yancy has over 120 more minutes then IT, and in that time has only managed to rebound 6 more boards. Rebounding has everything to do with size, strength and effort. Yancy has two of the three.

The ball bounced off the rim in a direction away from Yancy, Dixon grabbed the rebound.

Gates and Thomas have got to play well against talented schools. I don't expect 20 and ten, but have got to be a threat down low to allow some open outside shots.

Yancy needs to get in better position then. Your arguments are pathetic. Yancy plays when he wants to, its a very easy concept to understand. This can be fixed by him being benched. This would not happen under Huggins.

Ralph I admire your loyalty, but in this you are flat wrong. Yancy takes games off. It's a simple fact. That doesn't mean he can't turn his season season around. It does mean that this team will remain middle of the pack if he doesn't.

Being in the middle of the pack in the Big East is a good thing.

LL, how often do you chat "We're number 7! We're number 7!!"? Yes, you have a shot at the NCAA if you finish 7th or better, but finishing less than first should never be your goal. I guarantee you that Mick and the players want to win the league, not finish in the middle of the pack. Players don't play to finish 5th-8th.

Ask SEC Football coaches what middle of the pack gets you. Specifically, ask Mark Richt, who just two years ago had the #1 team in the country. It doesn't matter if you're in the A10 or the BE, you strive for first, you strive for top of the pack. You can temper expectations, but taking joy in being middle of the road is the talk of losers. Looking back at this year, I may accept an 8th place finish, but to strive for it, moving forward? No thank you.

It isn't hard to recruit guys that can give effort, they don't have front court players outside of Gates that are physically built to play in the Big East. Unfortunately the one that we do have plays like a pansy. Thomas is way to weak, but can be a decent back up at the 4/5. Wilks is way too weak and Jackson is too weak and immature. Bringing in another weak big man in Ellis isn't going to help, and we cannot expect much out of Gaines. Unless they get a JUCO guy that is going to be able to play right away the weak front court issues are only going to continue.

I agree with everything you've said here.

Yesterday's loss was frustrating to watch. But honestly, no one can expect Thomas or Wilks or Jackson to be effective vs. Syracuse's big men. They are what they are at this point. We needed Yancy to at least be a reasonable threat in this game. Other than an early and 1 opportunity he did nothing. He just doesn't fight for position and refuses to block out. Give the Cats a physical team with good big men to play and what happened yesterday is what will happen every day. Basketball is a lot about match-ups and Syracuse is about as nightmare a matchup as we can get. I was happy the way the rest of the team stepped up and kept them in the game, pulling to within 2. This team (as a whole) has heart and a desire to win. Losing to #4 on the road is one game, we have to as a team and as fans move on. Notre Dame and St. John's will be a better chance to win. The inability to beat a top five team on the road that presents a bad match-up for you isn't a huge sign of concern unless you're contending for the title. No one will mistake this team as contending for the title, so lets be glad this team is in our rear view and hope we don't see them in the conf. tourney.

I agree with this to an extent, but what people fail to realize is that Cronin hasn't had the luxury to bench guys. Up until last year, possibly even until this year, we didn't see effort out of five collective guys any given night. And given the status of our big men this team won't be competitive if Gates isn't in there. Mick tried benching him last year and I remember the boards blowing up. I think it was the Marquette game where Yancy was going through a few games of not rebounding and he benched him the last twelve minutes and the boards were erupting in anger. I do agree that Yancy needs to maybe not start next game or have a quicker leash right now, but we don't have a guy that can come in and replace him. Huggins always had the luxury of established recruiting to have guys in place and didn't have a Big East schedule to deal with that makes it easier to bench a guy for an extended period of time. Cronin is just now reaching that point, unfortunately the four position has not been kind to him. We REALLY need to use our last scholly on a big man next year. If a 2 or 3 guy is not giving it, Mick has the luxury of benching him for however long he deems necessary. Heck he had the luxury of not even using Bishop this year if he didn't want to. We just don't have that luxury at the four.

Completely agree. Its a very tough situation. I think Yancy continues to get the same minutes, but maybe not start? I dont have the solution to this problem, but its very frustrating to watch a big time scholy athlete play with no effort. I cant stand it.

I didn't get a chance to see the game yet, it's still on my DVR so I plan to watch soon. But on the Yancy issue, it is obvious he takes plays/games off. It's just a fact. From what I've heard his effort in practice is just as poor. I really think a message needs to be sent. He doesn't start until he starts showing effort in both practice and games. Mick must get control of him or I fear he may loose even more players. As for Thomas, he's just not strong enough to deal with the big men on the elite BEast teams.

Yancey played like Nancey. He has to realize that he is bigger and stronger than anyone in College Basketball.. Dude needs a shrink. Hell he even looks mean. If it was up to me i say lift the red shirt off of Kelvin and let him come in and swat shots like kenyon use too. Someone needs to bring Nancey in a huge bag of money( 10 million dollars worth)Tell him this is what he gets if he plays hard and then take it from him and tell him this is what he gets if he keeps playing like he is. Hopefully he would understand that logic.

This tells the whole story. In the three games since the win over Xavier, Yancy Gates and Thomas have a combined average of 10.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. That's combined!! If that's the kind of production you're getting from your starting 4-5 positions you aren't winning many games.

Thomas has been in foul trouble all three games and Yancy has been nursing a sprained ankle.

Another thing to consider, Mick coaches team rebounding, not individual rebounding, Yates and Thomas often position against their man so another Bearcat can grab the rebound.

UC and everyone else in the country. Also- whose fault is it Thomas has been in foul trouble? His production has been low either way, doesnt matter if he is playing or not because of foul trouble--both are his fault.
