Wow, Deveroes is about to start up

Dixon was a good player but never a good shooter. He was at his best attacking and rebounding from the perimeter. He played hard and loved being a Bearcat. I'm not worried about our guards. UC will have a strong backcourt for years to come.

I just don't understand saying JD3 athleticism compared to dixon he won't contribute right away. He got some playing time last season and he has the off season to work on his game. Im not worried about our guard play either. I don't think cronin will put his players in circumstances where they won't succeed due to there athleticism

I think Davis and Sanders will be the players that make strides next season, but think Davis is a year away from being consistently good. If he can get it together defensively, he could steal GG's minutes. Going to be interesting to see the strides each make on opposite sides of the ball.

Completely agree, I think come his junior and senior seasons Davis will be one of those players that isn't flashy and doesn't make alot of noise but at the end of the game he's got 10-12 points, several rebounds and several assists. Athleticism isn't everything. Davis isn't unathletic, he's just not a freak of nature athlete. He's quick and smooth and if he can get his feet set and hit a jump shot that is just as good as anything. This is college ball, not the NBA, being able to beat a defender one-on-one doesn't matter much in college because there's always a help defender or a shot blocker waiting for you to leave your feet. That's why Stephenson was a very average player here. That's why young point guards always get their shots blocked, they beat their defender and think they can throw up a soft lay-up.

I also like the court vision JD has. His decision making will improve with experience. He will hit shots and probably hit 36-40% of his 3's with work. He hit 38% in limited action this season. Davis can get in the lane as well and finish on contact. I'm not saying he will be all league but he will be solid. He has to improve his ft shooting though. He only hit 4 of 9. Unacceptable for a guard. I look for him to play the 2 a lot more.

there guard play will have to be outstanding this season for them to be just as good as last year. they don't have enough big bodies to do a whole lot especially when it comes to fouls

Stats from today so far:

Sanders - 24 pts, 8 rebounds, 4 steals
JD - 18 pts, 12 rebounds, 5 assists
Shaquille - 19 pts, 12 rebounds

I know it's summer league but good to see the guys playing well, especially Jermaine.

Yeah, Sanders was scoring 2 or 3 baskets last year...big improvement between the ears imo.

Mbodji is in better shape. I think Gaines will give good minutes and give them energy. Jackson will have to realize they need 25 minutes from him and play smart D. Rubles will need to adapt to D1 but has the athleticism to rebound and play D.

This group will rely on quickness and athleticism and this team will push, push. Don't be surprised to see Sanders play some 4 to stretch the defense. There will be various offensive combinations but they all will be built on pushing and attacking.

Nice lines. Future of UC basketball right there.

i agree with all of this except about gaines. I've been hearing from my people who have seen the sanctioned team workouts and the open gyms that gaines just isn't there yet and they don't expect him to play much this year. they think jackson is going to have to play 30 minutes a game. cheikh and rubles will, regardless of whether they are ready/able are going to have to play a lot of minutes- maybe 25+- as well.

this is why i especially agree with your point about sanders playing a stretch 4. the only hangup i foresee with this is a lineup with him and parker at 3 and 4 will be a lot slower than they are looking to be this year. not that this precludes them from running a lineup with those two together, but it could limit them a bit in terms of the full speed offense they are looking to implement.

He may contribute, I just don't see it being as much as what we've lost.
Luckily, we won't be asking him to contribute that much.
I'm not worried about the back court, all guards just aren't equal in every category. That may hurt us, it may not. I don't just presume someone to be a success either though.

Deveroes gives us a glimpse, Davis turning it over a lot and missing 3's. He's scoring, but I think against real competition, he won't be playing an important role this coming season. I can't comment on Guyn obviously. Sanders looked great today.

Are you nuts? You can get a jump shot in 4 years in college, you can't gain a ridiculous leap or speed if you don't have the kind of physiology to allow for such athleticism in the first place.
You may adapt a better handle, but you're not going to become that much quicker in terms of lateral quickness.
Some people have talents that others don't. Cashmere Wright is never going to be a tall point guard, Sean Kilpatrick is never going to leap over a 7' footer, at the full extension of his jump shot, at the height of his jump and block it. It's not physically possible.

Likewise, Gelawn Guyn isn't going to have the same vision as Dixon being like 3 inches shorter. He isn't going to grow longer arms, be as fast, post up and it's going to take him years, before he has the kind of skills with his handle, to create his own shot. That's just reality my friend.

What on God's earth are you talking about? Are you suggesting people don't play their best as upperclassmen? Do you watch basketball?

Hardly. You have to use context. His shooting suffered, because he was being hacked! Also because he had to shoot more, the more you shoot, the more you'll miss. People get tired when they work harder over the course of a game. His role and his minutes and the amount of contact he took changed. His average from the floor only dropped slightly.

Again context.

Okay, apparently getting hacked doesn't affect your shot LOL
Why don't we do an experiment? You go take 10 lay ups and then I'll come in, have you take 10 more and foul you as you're going to the basket.
Do you think it'll affect your percentage?
Context... Like I said. You can't just look at a number and expect to know the full story behind it.

alright, your arguments are so stupid I'm not going to waste any more of my time except to say that when you are fouled on a shot and miss, it doesn't count as a shot unless you make it. So your already unbelievably terrible argument that getting hacked is a reason his percentages are down just gets worse. I pray you don't actually lack this much basketball knowledge.

Understand that Shaq will play too. Gaines will give them minutes. Mark it down. It may be 5-10, but he will see the court. You need defense and rebounding when he's in. The rest is a bonus.

Very concerned we haven't brought in a big for this year. Gaines will get minutes but it won't be because he's ready. Jackson is a good defender but he doesn't have the bulk to play the middle in Big East. Modj is almost a unknown. We will miss Gates more than people realize. His size and his abiliyty to take up space was huge. He also had to be accounted for offensively. I think we will be better on the perimeter with another year for Parker and SK. I also think Parker can handle the role of second ball handler as Dion did when Cash wasn't in game. Sanders will be more of a factor. Without the threat of Yancy it will be tougher to get looks on perimeter. This team will have to be nails defensively and overwhelm you with numbers by pressing. Modj will have to make a huge leap both offensively and defensively and I hope Jackson has added some strength and weight.

The key to how far we go this year will be Cheikh. If he is up to the challenge we'll be fine. I know his injury took a lot of his effectiveness away last year but still playing the middle in BE is no easy assignment. Rubles and Jackson don't have the bulk to defend in the paint. They will come off their man and block a occasional shot but neither is a guy who can guard a true big. An example there is no one on this team who can guard Louisville's bigs. Please don't mistake me for a fair wheather fan. I'm a huge Cat supporter but not getting a big will hurt in my opinion.

the thing is- he doesn't even rebound his area aggressively or well for his area. just because he is 6'10 and can block shots doesn't mean he is a good rebounder.

a good shot blocker tends to lack in rebounds because they are busy trying to alternate shots but it's his defense he's needs to concentrate on anyway and will be just fine. he showed he can be a good put back and lob threat on offense
